We started Invariant with a simple, slightly stubborn idea: general-purpose AI is too important to be built only by a handful of giant companies, and too important to be built carelessly. So we set out to do it differently — small enough to move fast, serious enough to be trusted.
What we're building
Invariant is an AI lab and a product company. The lab makes the models. The product company puts those models in front of real people, learns what works, and feeds that back into the lab.
Our first product, Pluto, will launch on January 2 — a general-purpose AI assistant for conversation, writing, research, and code. Our second product, Airo, will follow this spring — an AI study tool that turns your own learning materials into quizzes, flashcards, and tutors.
Both will have a meaningful free tier. Both will be honest about what they can and can't do. Both are built on the same set of commitments we're publishing today.
What we believe
Capable, honest AI for everyone. Capable, because a useful AI has to actually help with real work. Honest, because the alternative is corrosive — a model that confidently makes things up does more harm than one that admits when it doesn't know. For everyone, because if this technology is going to shape the next decade, the people it shapes should have access to it.
Build with the people who use it. We don't think we get to design AI in a back room and announce the result. We'll publish our changes, write down our reasoning, listen to the complaints, and revise.
Move quickly without breaking trust. Independent labs ship faster. The trade is that we have to be more careful about what we ship. We'd rather hold a feature back a week than regret it for a year.
What we're not
We're not promising artificial general intelligence by Tuesday. We're not racing to be the biggest. We're not building tools designed to maximise time-on-app or harvest your conversations for advertising. None of that is the kind of thing the world needs more of.
What's next
On January 2, 2026, Pluto will be live. Everything else — Airo, Pluto V2, the products and the policies and the rough edges and the stuff we can't predict — will get announced here, in this newsroom, in plain English, with our names on it.
Thank you for being here on day one. We have a lot of work to do.
